Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties is a Christian housing ministry working to eliminate poverty housing in our area.

Who we serve...

Habitat is devoted to helping families living in substandard housing throughout the greater Stark and Carroll county area.

Families who partner with us must meet 3 criteria:

1. Need - currently live in substandard, overcrowded or unaffordable conditions.
2. Ability to pay - earn 30-70% of median income.
3. Willingness to partner - put in 275 hours building their home and the homes of others.

What we do...

We partner with low to moderate income families to provide them with an opportunity for homeownership that would not otherwise be possible. Future homeowners work beside volunteers to build their home and then purchase it with a 20-30 year, zero interest mortgage.

What we don’t do...

Our ministry does not give away houses. Habitat homes are SOLD. We are a “hand up, not a hand out.”

A Brief History

• 1988 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Canton is born through a small group of dedicated volunteers who were concerned about the housing needs of the city’s working poor. Through much prayer and hard work, the first home was completed in November 0f 1989 in the southeast section of Canton.
• 1998 – Canton Habitat celebrates its 10th anniversary by building its 100th house in the city. •
• 2005 - Following over a year of prayer and planning, and months of renovation work by dedicated Habitat volunteers, the Habitat ReStore in Canton opened in July of 2005 at 2800 Leemont Avenue NW. The store would serve as a fundraising division of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Canton, and as a way to help keep usable items from being thrown in a landfill.
• 2007 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Canton becomes Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties. The new name reflects an expanded service area that includes Canton and Massillon cities, as well as other areas of Stark and Carroll counties. Also in 2007, the ReStore moved from its Leemont Ave. location to a larger building at 4525 Cleveland Ave. NW.
• 2009 – More than 330 families in Stark and Carroll counties now live in safe, affordable homes through the generous and consistent efforts of dedicated Habitat supporters and volunteers.
