A journey for Habitat makes stop in Albany

July 24, 2009 Timesunion.com

ALBANY -- Two Habitat for Humanity supporters who are rowing from Cleveland to Key West made a stop in Albany this week.

Tom Kotula, 26, and Jon Hauserman, 22, known as "Habitat Crew," are volunteering on Habitat for Humanity construction sites along the route of their journey of over 2,000 miles. They also hope to raise awareness of the need for volunteerism, particularly during this time of economic recession.

"We were two friends who wanted to do something of value; something that also combined our shared passions for volunteering, traveling and rowing," Kotula said.

The two were on the rowing team together at Cleveland State University. Kotula graduated in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering; Hauserman expects to graduate in 2010 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Hauserman said the trip has been gratifying even beyond their expectations.

"We never realized all the help and support we would encounter along the way; we are certainly receiving more than we are giving," he said.

While in Albany, the two worked with Capital District Habitat for Humanity at its the construction site at 486 N. Pearl Street in Albany, helping cut and install wall panels.

The two started their journey in early June from the docks of Cleveland. Their boat -- named "Not for Sail" -- is a converted 19-foot 1972 O'Day Mariner from which the men removed the sailing equipment and installed oars.

When they reach their final destination in Key West this December, Kotula will trailer the vessel and drive back to Ohio.
