Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties Receives ENERGY STAR Award!
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties has been awarded one of twelve 2010 Regional ENERGY STAR Awards for Excellence in Affordable Housing. Only two other organizations in Ohio received this honor – PK Management, a housing management company, and TriState Habitat for Humanity in Cincinnati.
Presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, ENERGY STAR's Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing recognizes organizations committed to providing energy-efficient, affordable housing for lower-income families. Award winners are selected from a number of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
According to Brian Ng, Program Analyst for the ENERGY STAR program, "For lower-income families, energy costs consume a much larger proportion of their household income than families at higher income levels. By providing more energy-efficient homes for these families, Habitat for Humanity of Stark & Carroll Counties is allowing them to save more of their household income and giving them greater security against falling into a cycle of poverty. They also serve as an example for other builders that even a small builder with limited resources can build ENERGY STAR qualified homes."
In 2009, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties built 13 ENERGY STAR homes, featuring ENERGY STAR appliances, high-efficiency heating systems, well-insulated shells and other strategies aimed at increasing durability of the homes.
Joanne Callas, Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties said, “Here at Habitat, our mission encompasses helping individual families, our community and our environment, so we’re thrilled to be recognized for our efforts in energy-efficient building. Working in partnership with our generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers, our affiliate strives to use the best building practices to ensure all of our homes are of the highest quality, yet affordable for the families we serve. Our goal is to build all future homes to green building standards, leading the way in our community by providing an example and sharing our knowledge so that anyone can implement green building practices.”
As part of their commitment to environmental responsibility, Habitat will be building a LEED certified home in partnership with the Timken Company, beginning in July. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is an internationally recognized green building certification system.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties is a grass-roots, non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in the local community. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat provides low-income families with an opportunity for homeownership that would not otherwise be possible. Families partnering with Habitat help build their own home, then purchase the home with an affordable, zero-interest mortgage.
